After a nice continental breakfast, we embarked on a day trip to Zaanse Schans. We purchased tickets to travel from Amsterdam Central to Koog Zaandijk. After which we walked about ten minutes before reaching Zaanse Schans.
Zaanse Schans is a windy place and is famous for its spectacular windmills set in a remarkable landscape. During the region's heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries, there were about six hundred active windmills. Although we only saw six of them when we were there, it was still impressive to see them spinning in the wind.
There is a small village beside the windmills which provides visitors with a glimpse into the Dutch traditional crafts. We visited the wooden shoe workshop and learnt about the traditional clog making process through a live demonstration. We also viewed different types of unique and interesting clogs on display.
We visited the Bakery Museum where we saw variety of equipment used for food production in the past. This was certainly an enriching day trip for us.
