Chateau de Chaumont is perched on a hilltop and overlooks the Loire river. The nearest train station is Onzain and it takes about half an hour of trekking to get from the train station to the Chateau.
The Chateau has a long and interesting history. The castle was founded in the 10th century as a fortress to protect the surrounding lands. in 1465, King Louis XI ordered the castle's destruction after the rebellion of pierre d'Amboise. The Chateau was subsequently rebuilt by Charles I d'Amboise in the late 15th century. Catherine de Medici, the wife of King Henry II, acquired the Chateau in 1560. After the death of her husband, she forced his mistress, Diane de Poitiers, to exchange Chateau de Chaumont for Chateau de Chenonceau.
As with most of the chateaus, not all the rooms are restored to their full glory. However instead of closing off these areas, visitors are allowed to roam freely in these areas as well. This will appeal to visitors who enjoy adventuring and exploring the ruins of a chateau.

While the interior of the Chateau is interesting, the surrounding garden is appealing as well. The garden is filled with interesting art pieces installed throughout its premises.
