Korea Trip Day 5 : Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwamun & Dongdaemun

We got to see more of Cherry Blossom throughout our stay in Seoul. The pink flowers added a splash of vibrancy to the landscape and signified the arrival of spring in the city. Before heading out, we had a nice and filling breakfast at the hotel. There were a good selection of dishes to choose from. The good thing was that the dishes were rotated so we did not have to eat the same thing every morning.

After breakfast, we explored Gyeongbokgung Palace and witnessed the changing of the guards at the palace gates. The palace was completed in the late fourteen century during the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongbokgung Palace was located in an auspicious site with Mount Bugaksan to its rear and Mount Namsan in the foreground. Much of the original buildings were destroyed during the Japanese Invasion in late sixteen century. Parts of the palace were restored since 1990 and the effort was still ongoing.

We had ginseng chicken for lunch at 토속촌 Tosokchon (737-7444). This was a popular restaurant located nearby the palace. The ginseng chicken was stuffed with rice and ginseng root and broiled in a herbal soup. We had a satisfactory meal and we also got to experience dining in a hanok or traditional Korean house.

We strolled to Gwanghwamun Square after our lunch. This was a vast open space in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace where statues of two influential people in Korea, Admiral Yi Sun-Shin and King Sejong were situated.
We took the subway from Gwanghwamun Square to Dongdaemun. Dongdaemun was a large district specializing in wholesale clothing. There were many shopping complexes with retail shops from various local designers. The Dongdaemun gate stood nearby with its unique architecture from the Joseon era.

We stopped by Remicone at Doota! for a cup of ice cream. The shopfront was quite eye catching as it resembled an ice cream truck on wheels. It served various flavors of ice cream with numerous toppings to choose from.
